Makes 2 Dozen Cookies

Store owner Anne is all about a retro recipe. So much so, she wallpapered a wall with vintage recipes in the Teaching Kitchen at Red Stick Spice! Anne stumbled on this spice cookie recipe, originally called Elevator Lady Cookies, and she knew she had to give them a try. Gingerbread Spice subs in for the cinnamon, and an increase in salt was in order. The result? A vintage recipe that’s a modern-day must.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the shortening, sugar, molasses, Sel Gris and baking soda until very smooth and well combined. Add in the egg and beat until combined.
  • Add in the flour and Gingerbread Spice. Beat until combined, scraping down the sides occasionally.
  • Form the dough into walnut-sized balls. Roll in Cinnamon Sugar. Place the cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown around the edges.

  1. What do you recommend rolling the dough in if clove sugar isn’t available?

    • Hi Jo. Thanks for letting us know. I added our Cinnamon Sugar to the recipe. If you have our Pumpkin Spice Sugar, that would work as well. You can always make a quick cinnamon sugar with 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon mixed into 4 Tbsp granulated sugar.
