Crisp, tart apples are tucked into convenient refrigerator-section puff pastry in this lovely fall dessert. Granny Smith apples are in good company with our Apple Pie Spice and brown sugar. The golden brown, buttery pastry gives it all a warm hug. Awesomely Autumnal.
1 package refrigerated puff pastry
2 Granny Smith Apples, peeled & sliced
2/3 cup brown sugar | |
1 Tbl Apple Pie Spice | |
3 Tbl all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp Vanilla Bean Salt
1 egg + water for an egg wash |
1. | Preheat oven to 400°F. In a bowl, combine the apples, sugar, Apple Pie Spice, salt and flour. Set aside. |
2. | Roll out the puff pastry. Use a rolling pin to create a 12X12 square. Lightly score the dough in thirds to create guidelines - a center section and right and left side sections. Cut horizontal strips into the dough on the left and right sides, keeping the center third in tact. |
3. | Move the dough to a parchment-lined sheet pan. Spread the apple mixture over the center section. Fold the strips over the apples, alternating from right to left, to create a braided effect. Move to the fridge for 20 mins. |
4. | Remove from the fridge, and brush the pastry with egg wash. Bake for 25-35 mins or until golden brown. If the pastry is getting too brown before the apples are fully cooked, tent the pan with foil. Then remove the foil for the last 3 minutes of baking. |
5. | Rest the pastry for about 10 mins before cutting. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream. |
