Hobbit Day, celebrating the birthdays of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, is a charming escape into the enchanting world of Middle-earth. Embracing this day honors imagination, camaraderie, and the joy of simple pleasures. It’s a delightful reminder to relish life’s adventures, no matter how small or grand. For all our hobbit fans, here are seven dishes to serve at every hobbit meal.
1 -Breakfast – 7 a.m. Tasso and Mushroom Quiche
Quick and comforting. We love this quiche for its ability to come together in a snap and how it serves as a meal morning, noon or night. Surround it with all the breakfast foods, sidle it up with a salad at lunchtime or enjoy it alongside a cup of soup for dinner. No matter the time of day, this quiche fits the bill.
2- Second Breakfast – 9 a.m. British Sausage Rolls
The Kitchn described British sausage rolls as the U.K.’s version of pigs in a blanket. Pork sausage and pastry? We are all in! Traditionally made with homemade shortcrust, we’ve employed a shortcut here with frozen puff pastry dough. The pork gets seasoned with Mace, Nutmeg and a bit of Sage. Bake until golden brown, then pile on a platter. Add this fun, new twist to your next brunch! Be sure to serve it with Spiced Apricot Chutney!
3- Elevenses – 11 a.m. Strawberry Shortcakes with Rooibos Infused Berries
Strawberry Shortcake. Those two words just make us smile. What a perfect dessert to enjoy with tea. With that, we thought, how about we make the dessert with tea? Enter our Italian Blood Orange Tea. We steeped it, sweetened it and used it to soak the sliced berries to coax out the juices. The honey-sweet characteristics of the rooibos and bright orange were the perfect pair to get the berries to shine. All that plus flaky shortbread and clouds of whipped cream. Big, big smile.
4- Luncheon – 1 p.m. Beef Stew with Carrots and Potatoes
Classic beef stew with carrots and potatoes = the epitome of timeless comfort food. Tender chunks of beef are seasoned with our Beef Bourguignon Blend then slow simmered in a bold, Cabernet-infused broth. Red wine adds depth, and our Cabernet Sauvignon Red Wine Vinegar adds a nice balancing zip. The stew meat becomes fork tender and umami-rich. Carrots add a bit of sweetness. Potatoes are the stick-to-your-ribs filler. All together, pure, curl-up-with-a-bowl satisfaction.
5-Afternoon Tea – 3 p.m. Easy Cardamom Cruffins with English Breakfast Tea
Buttery, flaky, cardamom studded and crunchy with sugar – cruffins have it all. These darlings of social media are cross between a croissant and a muffin. Store-bought puff pastry works perfectly to create delicate layers for enrobing the warm cardamom, sugary sweet filling. Pop these in muffin tins and less than 20 minutes later, you’ll have a brunch crowd beauty that’s sure to please.
6- Dinner – 6 p.m. ? Chicken Scarpariello
This classic Italian American dish – also known as Shoemaker’s Chicken – is a one-pot marvel that hits every note. Sweet, spicy, vinegary and sweet. Hot vinegared cherry peppers are traditional but peppadews or pepperoncini work just as well. Potatoes are optional, but we highly recommend them. The hit of Red Wine Vinegar at the end seals the deal. Amazing.
7- Supper – 9 p.m. ? Autumn Spice Roasted Carrot Salad
Our Autumn Spice Blend is such a flavor explosion, we’re thinking of renaming it “All Year Long Blend.” Delicious on root veggies (like these carrots.) Fantastic on pork tenderloin. A must for Thanksgiving turkey. It’s subtle, rich flavor pairs perfectly with so many things.
